The City of Eternal Spring

At 1,500 meters elevation in the Central Highlands, Dalat is Vietnam's escape from the tropical heat. French colonists built it as a hill station in the early 1900s, and their influence lingers everywhere — from the Art Deco architecture to the strawberry farms to the surprisingly good local wine. While the rest of Vietnam swelters at 35°C, Dalat sits at a comfortable 18–25°C year-round.

What Makes Dalat Special

The Coffee Culture

Vietnam is the world's second-largest coffee producer, and Dalat grows the country's best arabica beans. Skip the tourist trap "weasel coffee" — instead, visit a local roaster like La Viet Coffee where you can taste single-origin beans, learn about the production process, and buy fresh-roasted coffee to take home. The café itself is a converted warehouse with an industrial-chic vibe.

The Flowers

Dalat supplies flowers to the entire country. The city is surrounded by greenhouses growing roses, hydrangeas, orchids, and sunflowers. Drive through the countryside and you'll see fields of color in every direction — it's like the Netherlands, but with tropical mountains as a backdrop.

Must-Do Experiences

Canyoning at Datanla Waterfall

Rappel down waterfalls, cliff jump into natural pools, and zipline through the jungle canopy. Dalat Canyoning (run by certified international guides) is genuinely thrilling — not a tourist gimmick. You'll spend 4-5 hours in the jungle getting soaked, muddy, and exhilarated. One of the best adventure activities in all of Vietnam.

Night Market

Every evening, the streets around Dalat Market transform into a food paradise. Must-try items:

  • Bánh tráng nướng — "Vietnamese pizza." Grilled rice paper topped with egg, spring onion, dried shrimp, and chili sauce. Crispy, savory, addictive.
  • Sữa đậu nành nóng — Hot soy milk with ginger. The perfect Dalat evening drink when the mountain air turns cool.
  • Grilled corn — Roasted over charcoal and brushed with scallion oil. Simple and perfect.
  • Kem bơ — Avocado ice cream. Dalat's famous dessert — creamy, rich, and unlike any avocado flavor you've had before.

Langbiang Mountain

A moderate hike (2 hours round trip) to the highest accessible peak near Dalat at 2,169 meters. On clear days, the views of the entire Central Highlands plateau are breathtaking — rolling hills, pine forests, and coffee plantations stretching to the horizon. Start early — clouds roll in by noon most days.

Getting There

  • From HCMC: 6-hour bus (Phương Trang, ~200,000 VND) or 1-hour flight to Liên Khương Airport
  • From Nha Trang: 4-hour bus through stunning mountain passes with hairpin turns and valley views
  • From Da Nang: Domestic flight (1.5 hours)

Insider Tips

  • Rent a motorbike and explore the surrounding countryside — pine forests, waterfalls, and flower farms are all within 30 minutes of the city
  • Dalat's artichoke tea is famous — try it hot from any street vendor. It's earthy, slightly sweet, and supposedly good for your liver
  • Bring a jacket — evenings are cool and mornings can be genuinely cold
  • Visit Monday–Thursday to avoid domestic tourist crowds that descend on weekends
