The City That Never Sleeps

Ho Chi Minh City — still called Saigon by everyone who lives here — has the most vibrant nightlife in Vietnam. From rooftop bars with skyline views to underground jazz clubs and sidewalk beer corners, the city comes alive after sunset and doesn't stop until dawn.

Top Neighborhoods

Bùi Viện (Backpacker Street)

The most famous party street in Vietnam. Cheap beer flows at 10,000 VND ($0.40) per glass of bia hơi, music blasts from competing bars, and an international crowd fills the street every night. It peaks around 10 PM–2 AM on weekends. Not sophisticated, but absolutely unforgettable.

The street closes to traffic on weekend evenings, turning into a massive open-air party. Grab a plastic stool, order a beer, and watch the parade of humanity flow past.

District 2 (Thảo Điền)

The expat neighborhood has transformed into Saigon's craft cocktail scene. Wine lounges, speakeasy bars, and live music venues line the tree-shaded streets. The vibe is more upscale and relaxed — think craft gin tonics at sunset rather than shots at midnight.

Try: The Deck for riverside drinks at sunset, or BiaCraft for Vietnam's best craft beer selection.

Rooftop Bars

Saigon's skyline is best enjoyed from above. The city's rooftop bar scene rivals Bangkok or Singapore:

  • Chill Skybar (AB Tower, District 1) — 26th floor views, dress code enforced, cocktails from 200,000 VND
  • Social Club (Hotel des Arts) — Art deco glamour with classic cocktails and a jazz soundtrack
  • Saigon Saigon Bar (Caravelle Hotel) — The historic bar where war correspondents gathered in the 1960s. The view of the Opera House at night is timeless.

Nguyễn Huệ Walking Street

On weekend evenings, this grand boulevard transforms into Saigon's living room. Street performers, food vendors, families, couples, and thousands of young Vietnamese enjoying the cool(er) night air. It's not a bar scene — it's a cultural experience.

Local Tips

  • Bia hơi (fresh draft beer) is brewed daily and costs almost nothing. Find it at any corner stall with tiny stools on the sidewalk.
  • Pre-game at a local quán nhậu (drinking-eating place) — order grilled seafood and beers for a fraction of bar prices
  • Grab is your best friend at 2 AM — avoid walking alone in quiet areas late at night
  • Most clubs have a 100,000–200,000 VND cover that includes one drink
  • Vietnamese nightlife starts late — don't arrive at a club before 11 PM
