Saigon is intense. After a few days of motorbike chaos, tropical heat, and non-stop street food, you might crave some nature and quiet. These day trips are all under 3 hours from the city center and offer a completely different side of southern Vietnam.
A vast underground network used by the Việt Cộng during the American War. Crawl through narrow tunnels (widened for tourists, but still claustrophobic), see ingenious booby traps, and gain a visceral understanding of the conflict that shaped modern Vietnam.
Tip: Book a morning tour — afternoons are brutally hot underground. Choose the Bến Dược site over Bến Đình for a less crowded, more authentic experience.
Skip the touristy Mỹ Tho tours. Go straight to Bến Tre — the "coconut kingdom." Small wooden boats glide through narrow palm-shaded canals, you'll visit coconut candy workshops, taste exotic tropical fruits, and eat a home-cooked lunch in a fruit orchard surrounded by birdsong.
The closest beach to Saigon. Not a tropical paradise, but a solid beach day with great seafood. Take the high-speed ferry from District 1 (1.5 hours, 250,000 VND) — it's faster and more scenic than driving. Front Beach is touristy — head to Back Beach for better waves and fewer crowds.
One of the most visually stunning religious buildings in Asia. The Cao Đài religion uniquely blends Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism, and Confucianism. The temple interior is a kaleidoscope of colors — blue columns, pink walls, dragon-wrapped pillars, and a giant divine eye watching from the ceiling.
Must-do: Attend the noon ceremony (12 PM). Hundreds of worshippers in white robes perform synchronized prayers — it's mesmerizing and respectful photography is allowed from the balcony.
Primary rainforest with gibbons, hornbills, and possibly even wild elephants. Stay overnight for the full experience — night safaris with a spotlight reveal a completely different world of civets, flying squirrels, and bioluminescent fungi.
