More Than Just a Transfer

Most tourists take a Grab straight from Da Nang to Hoi An — 30 minutes, 200,000 VND, done. But the coastal road between these two cities is one of the most scenic drives in Vietnam, and rushing through it means missing some incredible stops.

The Route

Stop 1: Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn)

Five limestone hills riddled with Buddhist caves, pagodas, and panoramic viewpoints. The elevator saves you the climb (15,000 VND), but the stone stairs are more atmospheric — worn smooth by centuries of pilgrims. Inside the caves, shafts of light pierce through holes in the ceiling, illuminating Buddha statues in an almost supernatural glow. Budget 1–2 hours.

Stop 2: Non Nước Stone Carving Village

At the base of the Marble Mountains, artisans carve Buddha statues, lanterns, and decorative pieces from local marble. Watching them work with simple hand tools is fascinating — and prices are a fraction of what you'd pay in tourist shops. A small marble Buddha makes a beautiful, meaningful souvenir.

Stop 3: An Bàng Beach

Just north of Hoi An, this is the beach the locals prefer over the more famous Cửa Đại. Less crowded, better beach bars, and excellent fresh seafood served right on the sand. Perfect for a long lunch break with your toes in the water.

How to Do It

  • By motorbike: The best option for flexibility. Rent in Da Nang (~150,000 VND/day), return in Hoi An (arrange with the rental shop in advance — most accommodate this).
  • By bicycle: Ambitious but doable for fit riders. 30 km, mostly flat with a gentle coastal breeze. Start early to avoid the midday heat.
  • By Grab/taxi: Ask the driver to take the coastal road (đường ven biển) instead of the highway. Most drivers are happy to stop for photos if you ask nicely.

Arriving in Hoi An

Hoi An's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site — over 800 historic buildings with Japanese, Chinese, and French colonial architecture. The real magic happens at night when hundreds of silk lanterns light up the narrow streets, reflecting off the Thu Bồn River. It's one of the most romantic scenes in all of Vietnam.

Plan to arrive in Hoi An by late afternoon. Check into your hotel, shower off the road dust, and walk into the Old Town just as the lanterns are being lit. Your first evening in Hoi An should be unhurried and magical.
